Patch 3.21 Removes Linux from your PS3

March 31, 2010 in NEWS

Patch 3.21 due on April 1, 2010 will remove the “Other OS” feature on some PS3 models; thus removing the ability to install or run Linux on your machine. Below is a post from Playstation Blog: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/28/ps3-firmware-v3-21-update/

**** Make sure you read the post below the Playstation post also!!!!! ****

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

* Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
* Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
* Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
* Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Don’t Update
A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat’s Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that’s how you want to play…

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won’t. It’ll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn’t lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn’t about getting what you didn’t pay for, it’s about making sure you do get what you did.

And this is about more than this feature right now. It’s about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it’s the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.

  1. so this update takes away web browsing alltogether or just modded ps3s

  2. No, Browsing is OK. It just does not let you install linux or other O.S. and if you already have it installed you will not be able to access it.

  3. so what will this patch do to our PS3′S? this is not some kind of virus to our PS3?

Tbh i don use other OS, thats why i have a pc

  5. Ok, I should’ve known better…….I first downloaded update, THEN it tells me I have to format drive (since I have Linux installed)…whatever, I rarely use PS3 for linux, NOW I have to download the update AGAIN. Thanks SONY for making this Soooo easy, and also removing a feature that I BOUGHT. I didn’t buy the newest PS3 just for that reason, so I can install linux, now you(sony) decide you want to CHANGE the product I bought????? I hope BMW doesn’t want to change my motor to one with less horsepower!

I see why everyone is annoyed but isnt that why we hav macs and pc’s?

  7. Guy,
I would have to disagree with you question/statment, here’s why:
I consider myself a discerning shopper when it comes to anything over $99.
I wanted a Blu-Ray player for my entertainment system. I also already owned a PS2 for gaming and liked games and was ready for the next level of gaming (Plus all my friends were telling me how great COD4 was and COD5 was coming out soon. I look at the Xbox: HDDVD, Media Center, and Gaming system. Then I took a look at the PS3. When I was looking they had Blu-Ray, Gaming system, Media Center, and could act as a computer with “Other OS”. I never had a computer with PPC processor so this sounded pretty cool, as I am also a Linux hobbyist. Xbox costs $100 less but you had to pay for service with the $100 difference being recouped in 2 years go with free PSN. So I purchased the PS3, because to me it had more to offer based on how it was marketed to me. “Free PSN, Blu-Ray, Computer, Media Center” NOW, Sony has taken away something that they marketed to me…….the computer. I am not “Hardcore” linux enthusiast and not many using PS3 are, BUT I think there would be a HUGE uproar if Sony (who sells standalone Blu-Ray players) decided it best to help their bottom line by selling more BR players by disabling the BR feature in the PS3. Is that any different? Make it JUST a gaming center and get rid of the BR so they can sell more standalone units? If you purchase MS Office with Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word then later MS decides to remove Excel from you MS Office Suite. A company should not be able to remove something from a product “as marketed at purchase” later. It is not right. It is wrong. IMHO.

Ok, i realise they have basicly scammed us, it could be considered false advertising IMO.
Its a bit like if they took away blu ray support and left us with dvd quality games.

  9. NO NEED TO UPDATE, for all those that havent yet updated and therefor lost their Linux/Other OS option here is a workaround works for all regions, Ive only tested with LAN cable but should also work if you connect using Wifi, this will get you back on PSN allow you to play online while still running pre 3.21 firmware, if your running new 3.21 this wont help, THIS IS NOT A HACK. Assuming your connecting via LAN goto network setting and set up new connection DO NOT SET AUTOMATIC do everything manually go through all setting and leave them as default untill you get to DNS Setting, Set Primary DNS to 67.202.81.137 leave secondary DNS blank and advance through all other setting leaving themn at default, now you should be online and have acces to PSN and online Gaming, Im not sure how long this method will work but from what I have read it tell the PS3 it is running current firmaware, solution was found in ps3-hacks forum , fully tested by me last night had no problems playing Bioshock2 online with 3.12 firmware, I also tested it with my US Jap and Hon Konk accounts and all is working fine, as I said Im not exactly sure how it works but for now its saved me loosing my Other OS lets hope Sony relent and fix this mess I payed top dollar for my original release Phat PS3 and Im damned if Im gonna loose what I payed for, btw ive have similar post removed from official eu.playstation forum lol hope this helps those who wanna play online and dont want 3.21 theft of fuctionality

  10. Stoneytone,

It won’t get removed here (your post)…LOL. I just wished you’d posted it sooner, I updated mine already cause I had to have my COD fix LOL. But I’m sure there will be a workaround to remove it soon enough, that is why I went ahead with it, but it sux right now cause I had to re-format and am currently updating all software. Almost done with MP2 from COD5, then I’ll download again MP3 so I can play Der Riese. This has grounds for a class action lawsuit IMO (I am no lawyer) but I can’t see how you take away something you marketed and sold as, especially peeps like you and me that specifically went for this model, just for that reason.

Thanks for the very informative post!
